How the Quiz Shapes Your Character
A Walkthrough Example
Imagine you're building a half-elf rogue. You start the quiz and pick "Raised by a single parent who worked the docks" for upbringing. For the defining event, you choose "You took the blame for a crime you didn't commit." Your secret is "You know the true identity of a local noble." And your rival is "A childhood friend who betrayed you for coin."
The generator assembles these into a backstory that explains why your rogue is cagey around authority, why they keep a low profile, and what personal grudge drives them. The plot hooks might include the noble sending agents to silence you, or the betrayer returning with an offer you can't refuse. A GM can drop either hook into a session with zero extra prep.
What the Generator Assumes
- Your game world has settlements, trade, and some form of authority (guards, nobles, guilds).
- Magic or supernatural elements exist, but the backstory works without them too.
- Your character is an adventurer or about to become one—the hooks push toward action.
- Names, places, and specific organizations are left generic so you can fill them in.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Picking answers that don't fit your class. A wizard raised by wolves can work, but think about how they learned magic. The generator won't stop you, but the table might raise eyebrows.
- Treating the output as finished prose. The backstory is a solid draft. Read it aloud, then adjust the tone to match your character's voice.
- Forgetting to share with your GM. A backstory only helps if the GM knows it. Use the copy or download button and send it before session zero.
- Ignoring the plot hooks. The hooks are the most valuable part for a GM. If you only read the paragraph, you're missing half the tool's value.
Sample Backstories by Class
Fighter: Raised in a border fort, you saw your first battle at fourteen. A commanding officer took credit for your tactics. You carry a sealed letter that proves the truth, but opening it would disgrace your family. Your rival is that officer, now a decorated general.
Cleric: You grew up in a temple orphanage. During a plague, you broke temple law to steal medicine for the sick. Your secret is that the high priest helped you and lied to protect you. Your rival is an inquisitor who suspects the cover-up.
Warlock: Your merchant family lost everything in a rigged trade deal. Desperate, you made a pact with a shadowy entity. You know the name of the noble who orchestrated the deal. Your rival is their heir, who inherited the stolen wealth and wants to erase all loose ends.
Quick Questions
- Can I use this for games other than D&D?
- Yes. The questions are setting-neutral enough for Pathfinder, Dungeon World, Shadowdark, OSR games, and many other fantasy TTRPGs. The plot hooks may need small adjustments for non-fantasy settings.
- Does the quiz save my backstory?
- Your current result stays visible until you start a new quiz or close the page. Use the Copy or Download button to keep it permanently. There is no server-side storage.
- What if I don't like a question's options?
- Pick the closest match and edit the final text afterward. The generator gives you a draft, not a straitjacket. You can change any detail in your character sheet.
- Can I share my backstory with my GM?
- Absolutely. Use the Copy button to paste it into a message, or download the .txt file and send it. The Share Link button creates a URL that reopens the quiz with your exact answers, so your GM can see the choices you made.
